Road Bikes

Road bikes are typically straightforward and are meant for everyday rides on paved roads. These are the bicycles you see on the streets while you're on your way to work or in the park during weekends. Unlike mountain bikes built for tough terrains with lots of additional gears, road bikes are much simpler.

They're built for speed and comfort, allowing you to go as far as your legs can pedal. While it's considered a traditional bicycle, there have been a lot of improvements around road bikes over the years.

At present, these rides mostly come in the form of carbon road bikes complete with high-end gear. They're faster than ever, more technologically sophisticated, and are even available in a variety of types.

What Are The Components Of Bikes?

Frameset

The frameset of a road bike is usually a fusion of the frame and fork. Usually, this is made with aluminium or carbon and sometimes steel or titanium. Currently, compact bike geometries are very popular and a lot of road bikes have adapted this design for a lighter form and improved standover height.

Wheels

The wheels of a road bicycle are less bulkier than those of a mountain bike. They are mainly centred on aerodynamics so the rims tend to be deeper and while the tyres are usually thin, they're gradually becoming wider for increased volume and smoother rides.

Crankset

Cranks come in different lengths to accommodate various leg lengths. For road bikes, two chainrings are usually used. A lot of them are equipped with compact 50/34t cranks which are lighter and more suited for adventure or gravel bikes.

Cassette

Road bicycles typically use tightly packed gears ideal for pedalling to a greater speed. Often, mid-range and high-end models ha 11-12 sprockets, while more affordable ones have around 9-10.

Derailleurs

Most road bikes have front and rear derailleurs. These help you change gear, allowing for maximum control while riding.

Handlebars

Bicycles made for daily rides are typically characterised by having drop handlebars. They offer flexible positioning and can be used for steep climbs or downward cruising.

Saddle

Comfort is a top factor in every road bike. Their seats might not look the part because they tend to be narrow and harder, but these actually provide better support for longer rides compared to softer saddles.

Brakes

Bikes for road cycling either have rim brakes or disc brakes. Both are equally effective, although disc brakes have a little edge in wet weather conditions.

How Much Are Road Bikes?

Road bikes for sale can range between $1,000 to over $12,000. Big difference, isn't it? Prices vary mostly in components and types-trek road bikes have a different price range from electric road bikes or flat bar road bikes and so on.

After you have chosen the type of bicycle you want, the most important things to look for are the frame material and the quality of the components. For instance, a carbon-fibre frame will cost you more than an aluminium one. High-grade specs will add to your total number of expenses as well.

In order to make the purchase worth your money, make sure you know exactly what kind of bike you need. Remember, a carbon road bike tends to be pricier than an aluminium-framed one. However, they are usually lighter and stronger compared to aluminium ones which are more fitted for leisure rides.

It would also be a good idea to set aside around $100 to $250 for additional biking accessories a road bike helmet and road bike shoes.

What Are the Types of Road Bikes?

Race

Lightweight and speed-focused, a racing bicycle is for those who want to go fast in full comfort. The frame of this tends to be stiffer and extremely responsive for swift, easy rides.

Gravel

At first glance, gravel bikes look a lot like cyclocross bikes but it's more designed for comfort. Basically, this allows travel on off-road terrain for long hours although not as powerful as mountain bikes for tougher terrains.
